Around fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then found numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior official stated the incident left him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
