Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen data.
