The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
