Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
